Embrace the suck...you'll live longer

When Life Gives You Lemons...

Garfield, and almost everyone else in the world, hates Mondays.

Cars break down. Unexpected expenses arise. Things break in our homes. Kids get in trouble. Keys get locked into cars.

Life has a way of kicking you in the stomach and sometimes even worse.

As my friend Joy often says, it's the rule of Yin and Yang. Sometimes life is great....and sometimes not so much.

Yesterday, a freak lightning strike turned our van into a 5,000 lb paperweight. The bolt hit a tree and then jumped into the electrical system of the car via the antenna.

As Kramer once said on Seinfeld:

‘It was a million to one shot, doc, million to one.’
— Seinfeld: The Fusilli Jerry Episode

Now, I could have gotten mad, depressed, or even despondent.
But I didn't.
What did I do?

I laughed and then focused on moving forward. There was no way I was giving life the satisfaction of knowing that it had knocked me down.

It's a philosophy carried over from my military days... Embrace The Suck.

It basically means "Yes, it sucks, but there's nothing you can do to change what happened, so embrace it and move on."

Check out this article about a military mom's advice. It's the advice she gives her kids, but it's good advice for anyone.
